Mica Simmons Smith was awarded the 2023 Global Footprints Scholarship in horticulture, providing her with the opportunity to enhance her horticultural expertise through placements at several of the world’s most prestigious gardens and botanical institutions.
Her journey began at the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall, where she engaged with diverse garden environments including the immersive Jungle Garden, the productive garden, and the pleasure grounds. Immersed in an approach that harmonises gardening with natural ecosystems, Mica developed a deep appreciation for sustainable garden management that supports both plant health and local wildlife.
At the Eden Project, Mica contributed to the care of the Rainforest and Mediterranean Biomes, gaining valuable knowledge in sustainable practices such as integrated pest management and biological control methods. This experience broadened her understanding of ecological balance within controlled environments and innovative strategies for plant care.
Mica’s time at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew in London further expanded her expertise, as she worked with diverse collections including the Rose Garden, Woodland Garden, and temperate glasshouse plants. Here, she witnessed the meticulous efforts required to preserve global plant biodiversity and contribute to ongoing conservation initiatives.
Her scholarship culminated with a placement at Monet’s Garden in Giverny, France, where she assisted with propagation, maintenance, and pond management. Exposure to the regional horticultural culture and practices enriched her perspective, reinforcing the connection between gardening, heritage, and community wellbeing.
Throughout her scholarship, Mica demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainable horticulture and the therapeutic potential of gardens. The experience not only enhanced her technical skills but also deepened her dedication to integrating ecological stewardship and wellbeing in her professional career. She returned inspired and equipped to contribute meaningfully to the future of horticulture.
