“I’ve always believed that gardens are more than beautiful spaces – they’re living expressions of care, culture and creativity. This scholarship helped me see just how far that belief can grow.”

Nathan Watson believes that gardens are more than beautiful spaces; they are living expressions of care, culture, and creativity. His 2023 Global Footprints Horticulture Scholarship enabled him to explore this belief deeply through four transformative months working in world-renowned gardens across France and Ireland.

Nathan’s scholarship journey began at Claude Monet’s Garden in Giverny, where he contributed to the maintenance of the Clos Normand and the Water Garden. His work included seasonal planting displays, caring for the iconic water lilies, and assisting with water reservoir management. Immersed in the artistry behind Monet’s vision, Nathan gained insight into the garden’s deliberate design, which balances natural aesthetics with careful planning to sustain seasonal colour.

Behind the scenes, Nathan supported plant propagation and learned about innovative tunnel-based storage systems. He was particularly inspired by the garden’s commitment to biological pest control, reflecting France’s zero tolerance policy on urban pesticides. This sustainable approach to plant health has influenced Nathan’s own horticultural practices.

One of the most profound aspects of Nathan’s time at Monet’s Garden was observing the evolving changes in texture, flower form, light, and reflection elements that create an immersive and emotional garden experience rather than just a landscape.

In Ireland, Nathan joined the team at Blarney Castle and Gardens in County Cork. His work ranged from seasonal planting in the Turnstile Garden to orchard maintenance and sustainable forestry. Managing the estate’s organic apple production using composted manure and green waste highlighted how sustainability is integrated into every aspect of horticulture.

A pivotal moment in Nathan’s journey came through working alongside Dave, a seasoned forester, who introduced him to low-impact, hands-on land care principles. Dave’s insights into microclimates and the use of well-maintained hand tools reshaped Nathan’s approach to sustainable forestry. He recalls Dave’s words: “Forestry is a practice of nurturement and protection,” a philosophy Nathan carries forward.

Beyond the gardens, Nathan embraced Ireland’s natural beauty, including a memorable hike up Carrauntoohil, the country’s highest peak, on a clear day—an experience that contributed to his personal growth.

Nathan returned home with enhanced professional skills, greater clarity about his future, and a deepened commitment to sustainable horticulture. He expresses gratitude to BBM, Global Footprints, his sponsors, mentors, and the teams in France and Ireland who welcomed him warmly. The lessons and inspiration from this journey continue to shape his career and life.
