Scott Shearan

2017 – Transport and Logistics

“My scholarship experience has allowed me to take that step forward to see where this industry is heading. It’s great to be a part of that future industry change, be there whilst it’s all happening and make an influence on it.”

Scott Shearan was awarded a scholarship in 2017, while working as an automotive diagnostic technician at a small business.

Scott selected three companies for his scholarship work placements, one of which was SBD Automotive in Milton Keynes, a research consultancy company, where Scott worked in the autonomous vehicle division.

This time at SBD, had Scott looking at the future of vehicle architecture and about autonomous vehicles.

When he moved to his next placement at RDM Group, he got to work hands-on on the engineering and design of autonomous vehicles.

Recognising Scott's passion and potential, RDM Group offered him a permanent role, which Scott accepted.

In an interview with RDM Group / Aurrigo in 2019 Scott reflected on his scholarship experience:

“I guess one of the greatest challenges is just pushing yourself out of that boundary; coming overseas by yourself and not knowing anyone. Really, just taking a shot and taking on this opportunity that I had. That was a big thing for me, stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new and different. […] My scholarship experience has allowed me to take that step forward to see where this industry is heading. It’s great to be a part of that future industry change, be there whilst it’s all happening and make an influence on it, if possible.

“One of the most important trends is looking at the environment on the future development of our vehicles, with a huge focus being on electric vehicles. The future is not only going to have a massive impact on the automotive trade but every other trade as well.”

Aurrigo encouraged Scott to pursue an engineering degree at university which further accelerated his career in driverless electric vehicles with Aurrigo and beyond.

Today, Scott works as an engineer for Arrival, a zero-emissions vehicle manufacturer in London.

Scott’s message to young talent in his industry and future scholars, at the end of that interview with Aurrigo three years ago, still stands:

“Don’t be afraid to take a risk and make a change. Always look to the future and see what is changing around the trade. And always be prepared for that change and be ahead of the game.”
