2026 | Construction - Carpenter (Trade)
“Building a home that will last, perform well, and tread lightly on the earth is the highest standard I can aspire to.”
From the moment I picked up my first hammer, I knew this was more than a job; it was a calling. I take pride in building homes families will live in for generations, and hold myself to a high standard because today’s work becomes someone’s home tomorrow.
Sustainability in construction starts with awareness. I save timber offcuts, plan my cuts to minimise waste and am learning how airtight construction, thermal bridging, window placement and insulation can help build homes that last, perform well and tread lightly on the earth.
This scholarship is an opportunity to grow into the carpenter and person I want to become. I want to see how other countries rethink construction through passive house design, responsible timber sourcing and low-carbon methods, and how tradespeople approach their craft and standards.
I hope to travel to Japan, where traditional craftsmanship sits alongside energy-efficient residential construction. I want to learn from Japanese carpenters’ precision, discipline and attention to detail, and understand how passive design, materials and training deliver high-performance homes.
“An is very persuasive and passionate about reducing building waste and increasing sustainability. He shows a definite love of the industry and a desire to make a difference.”
