2026 | Construction - Carpenter (Trade)

“I hope that through this scholarship I will become part of a new generation of carpenters who value craftsmanship, longevity and environmental responsibility.”

I have been around and worked with timber my whole life. My parents met while campaigning to protect the rainforests of Kalimantan, and I was raised in a house made of recycled Indonesian hardwood. I am now a carpenter, and these experiences strengthened my resolve to pursue sustainable building that values craftsmanship, longevity and environmental responsibility.

With this scholarship I hope to learn directly from craftspeople and sustainability leaders who approach building thoughtfully. I hope to gain hands-on experience with reclaimed materials, bamboo, low-impact construction and traditional carpentry, and bring new knowledge and techniques to Australia.

I hope to travel to Indonesia. It is home to excellent craftspeople and leaders in reclaimed materials and carbon-sensitive building alternatives, including Cave Urban and Green Building Kolektif. Their work sits at the intersection of craft and ecological design. Travelling there will also allow me to reconnect with my Indonesian heritage and navigate the culture through the lens of an adult.

“Yan’s very detailed response, personal conviction and experience so far align with the potential of being a future leader.”
