2026 | Transport – Boat Building (Trade)
In honour of Ken Johnstone
“My goal is to help promote more sustainable boat building practices so future generations can continue using and appreciating traditional materials like teak and Huon pine in a responsible and environmentally sustainable way.”
I am an apprentice boat builder and passionate about preserving traditional materials such as teak, Huon pine and other rare hardwoods. I am most proud of being involved in full classic Halvorsen boat refits. I really enjoy bringing these iconic timber boats back to life and preserving the craftsmanship, materials and traditional skills invested in them.
Restoring timber boats instead of discarding or replacing them extends the life of each vessel, reduces waste and preserves the craftsmanship and materials already invested in it. We repair and reuse existing timber wherever possible, reducing demand for newly harvested timber.
I hope to visit countries that are leading sustainable boat building and timber innovation. I hope to gain firsthand experience in sustainable forestry, alternative materials and manufacturing methods that reduce pressure on rare timbers while maintaining strength, quality and craftsmanship. I would particularly like to travel to Sweden. I am especially interested in its sustainable forestry and innovative wood engineering in the marine industry.
