2026 | Horticulture

In honour of Sir John Pagan

“I am incredibly passionate about responsible stewardship of the land, and try not only to make a positive contribution to my environment through my work, but to also minimise the negative impacts.”

Throughout my traineeship I have been reminded that there is always more to learn in horticulture, both in practice and theory. As I look forward to beginning my career as a qualified horticulturalist, I am seeking every opportunity to expand my knowledge, develop my skills and grow to be a better gardener.

I am incredibly passionate about conserving Australian native plants and about my work at the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium in its vital role in ex-situ conservation. I am especially proud of having been able to contribute in a small way to the conservation of a threatened Gentialla species with the SA Seed Bank, as they work with the Gardens nursery staff.

I hope this scholarship will expose me to different approaches to horticulture and challenge me with new ways of thinking and acting. I would like to travel to New Zealand, where practical learning is applicable to my work in Australia.

I would like to learn about sustainable practices in botanic gardens, native revegetation and conservation at Hinewai and Otari-Wilton’s Bush, and how Māori culture and learning are integrated in horticulture.

“Darcee shows a strong sense of purpose and demonstrate exceptional commitment to conservation, sustainability and continuous learning.”
