Lachlan Debel

2026 | Refrigeration (Trade)

In honour of Tom Gunning

“If I can fully understand the system I am working on, and design its control logic to be the most efficient, that’s my part for the environment achieved.”

I love my trade and the work that I do on the daily. Competing at regional, state and national levels through WorldSkills Australia accelerated my learning and progress, and I believe in pushing myself to be a better tradesman so I can deliver better work.

In Building Management Systems, you are constantly looking for the little efficiencies in your equipment. If I can understand the system and design its control logic to be as efficient as possible, that is my part for the environment achieved.

I am looking for a broader and more diverse skillset. The advanced equipment I most enjoy comes from European and Asian brands, and the trade is so much more advanced overseas that gaining hands-on experience is something I cannot pass up.

I would love to tour or work with brands in Europe, particularly Bitzer and Condair. It would be such a fantastic experience to see how their equipment is made, understand the quality control and use cases, and apply that experience to my work.

I am learning German, and I could think of nothing more suitable than going to Germany to learn German refrigeration and advance Australian refrigeration.

“Lachlan’s interest in building management systems and international technologies demonstrates forward thinking and a desire for continual improvement.”
