Thomas Greaves

2026 | Manufacturing (Trade)

In honour of Clive Sisley

“Manufacturing is an industry that is always looking to be more sustainable and efficient. It would be great to see how other places around the world work sustainably.”

I’m a fitter and machinist apprentice who loves my trade and gives 100% to every job I do. After attending the Australian Skills Excellence Forum in Perth, my eyes were opened to the incredible manufacturing capabilities that exist and how much there still is to learn. That experience changed the way I see the industry and made me want to broaden my knowledge by learning how people in other parts of the world work, problem solve and create.

Where possible, I believe in repairing rather than replacing equipment. Rebuilding worn components saves material, time and energy, and I want to learn how manufacturers around the world are making their industries more sustainable and efficient.

The best way to keep advancing my skills is by exploring, seeing and working in new places. I’d love to travel through Europe, Canada or Asia, particularly to work with companies like Doppelmayr, whose ropeway technology combines innovation, efficiency and sustainability. My goal is to bring those skills and ideas back to Australia and apply them in my own work, while also experiencing the culture, history and people of wherever I go.

“Thomas shows outstanding enthusiasm for his trade, with a strong commitment to learning and self-development.”
