2026 | Horticulture

“It would be my goal to absorb as much information as possible and, upon my return, advocate for the best sustainability strategies in an Australian context.”

It is my firm belief that horticulture and conservation go hand in hand.

My field of interest surrounds bryophytes, particularly peatland moss species such as sphagnum. While working at a plant nursery, I often spoke with customers about how unregulated harvesting of sphagnum can degrade peatland ecosystems, and I suggested alternative substrates. In my current role as a bush regenerator, I have promoted the identification of bryophytes and lichens so they are not overlooked in biodiversity surveys.

I hope my Global Footprints Scholarship will help me pursue a career in conservation horticulture, expand my knowledge base and offer practical skills. With this opportunity, I aspire to travel to a select few Northern European countries that are leading efforts in peatland restoration and paludiculture.

By learning from professionals protecting peatlands and improving the sustainability of horticultural sphagnum, I plan to return to Australia with confidence in my ability to act in the interest of Australian peatland ecosystems.

“Piper has demonstrated a strong understanding of sustainability and how it relates to her industry. She has a clear passion for their chosen field and has demonstrated initiative in sharing her knowledge with others.”
